Crawford County resident Dennis Massions won a $50,000 top prize when he uncovered 11 words hidden within the puzzle of his Missouri Lottery “Bonus Word Crossword” Scratchers ticket. Massions purchased the winning ticket at Hot Spot, 320 N. Osage Blvd., in Nevada.
“Everybody thinks you’ve got to have a system, I guess, but I don’t,” he explained of his playing strategy. “I don’t go to one store all the time. After you play a while, you kind of get an inkling for where to go every once in a while. Sometimes one machine will pay off and then it’ll kind of go dry for a while, and you go somewhere else.”
Massions does profess a fondness for crossword-themed Scratchers games, though.
“That’s just my favorite,” he said. “I find that, in my experience, they pay off the most.”
Massions – who said his initial reaction to winning $50,000 was, “Nah, this can’t be happening!” – has yet to make firm plans for his winnings.
“I don’t know what I’m going to do. Nothing big,” he laughed. “I’ll probably buy some more tickets, though.”
“Bonus Word Crossword” began on Dec. 2, 2016. The $3 game still has more than $5 million in remaining prizes, including three more top prizes of $50,000.
In the most recent fiscal year, players in Vernon County won more than $2.7 million in Missouri Lottery prizes.
