Ticket 'Collection' Turns into $50,000 Payday

Stephan Gibson likes to collect Missouri Lottery Scratchers tickets from various retailers, gathering a collection before he scratches them.  But there was nothing routine about the night the Kansas City resident uncovered the first top prize on a “Crossword Multiplier” ticket, scoring a $50,000 prize on one of the tickets in his stash.

“Every time I go to a gas station, I’ll go in and buy like a $1 ticket here and a $3 ticket there,” he explained. “I usually sit down, and while I’m watching TV, I’ll start scratching all the tickets that I collected.”

The television quickly faded into the background on Feb. 3, though, as the prize behind the very last ticket he was scratching came to light.

“I was so shocked,” he said, adding that his first step was to take his ticket to a Lottery retailer to make sure the win was real. “The man scanned the ticket, and his eyes shot up real big, and he was like, ‘You need to go home and hold onto that ticket!’”

Gibson bought the winning “Crossword Multiplier” ticket at Raytown Petroleum, a Phillips 66 station, located at 5304 Raytown Road in Raytown.

“I like the suspense behind it,” he said of the appeal that particular game. “And that one? That one was shocking!”

Gibson said he is moving into a new house soon and, thanks to his Scratchers winnings, “everything is falling into place quickly.” A self-described “super uncle,” he also plans to help out his sister and her children.

In the most recent fiscal year, players in Jackson County won more than $67.8 million in Missouri Lottery prizes. An additional $39.6 million went to education programs in the county, and local businesses earned more than $6.8 million in Lottery commissions.
