Matthew Britton said he never really played Powerball until the Mega Millions changes happened in October of last year. Now he plays both, depending on which jackpot is higher. And since Powerball’s jackpot was up to $280 million on May 17, he purchased a Powerball ticket using Quick Pick, leading him to a $50,000 win.

“I saw it on the fridge Sunday morning, and I thought, ‘I should check it,’” said the Lee’s Summit resident, who used the Official App of the Missouri Lottery to check his winning ticket. “And then I said, ‘Holy expletive. Uh, I think we nearly won Powerball.’”

“I was chopping an onion to make lasagna. And I was like, ‘What?’” laughed Britton’s wife, Casey. “I thought he maybe won like a $1,000. Then, he turned his phone around to show me. And I said, ‘Is that right? Is that real?’”

They were in the middle of preparing for family to come over for a belated Mother’s Day. Once family arrived, they shared the news that they had just won $50,000 playing Powerball.

“It’s created a savings account for us. And our house could use some new windows. Adult things, I guess,” laughed Britton. “I am sure we will do a few fun things, too.”

Britton purchased his winning ticket at Hy-Vee Gas, 920 N.E. Langsford Road, in Lee’s Summit.

Powerball is a $2 per play multi-state Draw Game that features jackpots starting at $40 million. Powerball drawings are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 9:59 p.m.
