Winning the Missouri Lottery was not on Lakisha Liner’s mind when she received a phone call from her nephew’s school saying that he needed to be picked up due to feeling unwell. However, soon after returning home from the unplanned errand, the St. Louis resident would be $100,000 richer.

“I had $15 in Scratchers, so we stopped to cash them in on the way home,” said Liner, who chose Shop ‘n Save, 9521 Lewis and Clark Blvd. in Moline Acres, for her pit stop. “I’ve never been there before. We were just driving past, and that’s where I stopped.”

Liner traded in her winning $15 Scratchers ticket for three $5 tickets, one of which was a “Big Money Crossword” ticket, and she played each game upon returning home.

“My husband and I were talking about what bills needed to be paid next while I was playing, so I wasn’t paying too much attention,” recalled Liner. “At one point, I stopped to look and counted nine words. I couldn’t believe it.”

Realizing that her $5 ticket was going to contain a large prize, Liner continued playing the ticket and matched her letters with a 10th word in the game, earning her a $100,000 prize.

“I yelled at my husband, ‘Are you seeing this?’ Then I grabbed my son, ‘Are you seeing this?’ I even woke up my mother. She wasn’t happy, and then she looked at the ticket,” laughed Liner.

The St. Louis resident claimed the top prize at the Lottery’s St. Louis regional office on Oct. 25, the same day she purchased the ticket, saying that the prize was a true blessing that came at just the right time.

“We are paying off bills with this,” said a relieved Liner. “I have twins going to college next year. I just can’t believe this happened.”

Big Money Crossword” is a $5 crossword-themed ticket. Players uncover their letters and try to match them to the letters in the game’s two prize puzzles. The more complete words formed, the higher the prize. Introduced on Sept. 10, “Big Money Crossword” has more than $10 million in prizes remaining.
