A lucky Hannibal man ended up leaving the grocery store with more money than he went in with, thanks to a spur of the moment decision to purchase a Missouri Lottery Scratchers game. Alex Hudelson, 28, uncovered a $50,000 top prize on a “Bonus Word Crossword” ticket he bought while shopping at Kroger, 200 Huck Finn Shop Center, in Hannibal.

“I checked the ticket at least 10 times at home,” Hudelson began. “I had my wife double-check it, too. It was unbelievable!”

The windfall came at an opportune time for the Hudelsons, as they prepare to welcome a baby into their family this spring.

“This is going to buy the clothes, crib and furniture,” he explained, adding that whatever is left will go towards savings, Christmas and his favorite pastime – sports.

The self-proclaimed “ultimate St. Louis Blues® and St. Louis Cardinals® fan” also plans to use the winnings to attend “a few extra games and buy some more at the concession stands.”

Bonus Word Crossword,”  a $3 game with a top prize of $50,000, officially started on Aug. 27.
