Sue Stulgo of Ashland was waiting to pick up a pizza at Casey’s General Store, 500 E. Broadway in Ashland, when she made a spur-of-the-moment purchase that returned an unexpected payoff. The Missouri Lottery “MONOPOLY™” Scratchers ticket she bought would soon reveal a prize of $20,000.
“I was waiting on the pizza, so I thought, ‘I’ll just get one of those “MONOPOLY™” tickets,’” she shared, adding that she later changed her mind and bought a second ticket as well.
It turned out to be a good move.
“It was the second one that I won on,” said Stulgo, a 44-year-old employee of the University of Missouri system.
Retracing her steps, she explained that she keeps “a lucky dime” on the top of her refrigerator for scratching lottery tickets.
“I say, ‘Use a dime, and win every time,’” she said, with a laugh.
She used the lucky dime and her preferred system of scratching off all the numbers before even looking at the prizes. She wasn’t sure what it meant when she uncovered the game’s “moneybag” symbol, but, as she read more, she realized she had won all 20 prizes on the ticket.
“I flipped all the lights on in the kitchen, and I was like, ‘Am I reading this right?’” she said.
The amount of her win soon came into focus, and she stopped in her tracks.
“I left it there and backed away; I couldn’t even finish scratching,” she relayed, still smiling.
As for plans for her winnings, Stulgo said she’s always told her siblings that, “If I win, we all win,” so she plans to share a small portion of the prize money with each of them.
“MONOPOLY™” officially started Sept. 10 and offers a top prize of $100,000. In addition to the top prize, the $5 Scratchers game also offers thousands of other prizes ranging from $5 to $20,000, all of which can be tracked at MOLottery.com.
