The record $587.5 million Powerball run in November helped boost Missouri Lottery monthly proceeds for public education to the third highest ever - $28.7 million. The regular transfer of $28,718,272 brings the total transferred in FY13 to more than $141 million.
“The Powerball run, which started in October and ended on Nov. 28, brought in approximately $10.7 million just from Powerball sales alone,” said May Scheve Reardon, executive director of the Missouri Lottery.
The largest Lottery proceeds transfer to date followed the largest jackpot in United States history, a $656 million Mega Millions jackpot won in March.
“These games have a way of bringing not only a lot of excitement to the players, but also a windfall to the state. In addition to Lottery profits, the state will also gain another $7.7 million in income taxes, since one of the winning tickets was purchased in Missouri. It’s a win-win situation.”
Since the Lottery began in 1986, it has generated more than $4.4 billion for the state and public education. Programs funded in FY13 include the A+ Scholarship Program, the Foundation Program and Access Missouri.
