Sheila Anderson of Kansas City is starting off 2013 with a financial bang. The 45-year-old administrative assistant won $169,000 on the Missouri Lottery’s Show Me Cash game.
Anderson explained that she’s been playing the same numbers for years. However, in addition to playing her usual numbers, she had an inclination to buy a Quick Pick ticket. Coincidentally, the Quick Pick ticket matched all five numbers drawn on Dec. 17, 2012.
It was while getting coffee at QuikTrip, 8733 E. 63rd St. in Raytown, that Anderson scanned her tickets on a Check-A-Ticket machine. The store regular couldn’t believe her eyes.
“I held my heart and fell to the ground,” she shared. “I asked the clerk standing near me to get the manager, who I know, because I go in there all of the time.”
After receiving confirmation that the ticket was indeed a winner, Anderson returned to her car where she “cried and screamed” in delight.
Anderson said the prize will allow her to do something she’s been dreaming about.
“I’m going to pay off my house!” she exclaimed. “That’s what I wanted for Christmas, but I knew I wouldn’t be able to do that. Now I can!”
In addition to bidding adieu to her monthly mortgage payment, she and her husband, who will celebrate their first wedding anniversary this July, will use the windfall to do something else they thought wouldn’t be possible.
“We never had a honeymoon,” she explained. “We’re going to go somewhere this summer – maybe Jamaica or a cruise.”
In addition to turning two dreams into realities, Anderson said she’ll also use the winnings to help family members and save for retirement.
Show Me Cash offers a rolling jackpot starting at $50,000, which increases by at least $5,000 at each drawing. The winning numbers from the Dec. 17, 2012, drawing were: 19, 23, 31, 33 and 34.
