Wesley Menefee of Troy is the lucky Missouri Lottery player who claimed the third largest Show Me Cash jackpot ever. Menefee, 44, used Quick Pick to match all five numbers drawn on Jan. 9, earning him $803,000.
While claiming his prize at Lottery headquarters in Jefferson City, Menefee and his wife Jeanine, joked about the winning moment.
Wesley explained that he often thought about what he’d do if he were to win a large prize. He believed he’d “be discrete” and not share the news with anyone. Yet, when his daydream turned into a reality, he was surprised by his reaction.
“I screamed, and the whole gas station knew I won,” he said, referring to when he checked his Show Me Cash ticket at Circle K, 1001 Lake St. Louis Blvd., in Lake St. Louis. “It was very exciting!”
After receiving a bevy of handshakes, pats on the back and well wishes from retail clerks and fellow patrons, he climbed into his truck and drove home to tell his wife the good news.
“She didn’t believe anything until she saw me start to cry a little bit,” Menefee shared. “All we’ve ever talked about was paying off our home and our cars. It’s going to set us up for the rest of our lives.”
Wesley reminisced about the win, noting that he was still in shock.
“How in the world could I be the one that got it?” he rhetorically asked.
Jeanine was quick to add that his fortuity was a result of “good karma.”
“He’s such a giving man,” she added.
“Now I have nothing to pay,” he beamed. “That’s the best feeling in the world!”
Show Me Cash offers a rolling jackpot starting at $50,000, which increases by at least $5,000 at each drawing. The winning numbers from Jan. 9 were: 5, 26, 27, 32 and 35.
The largest Show Me Cash jackpot to date was $898,000 on Oct. 4, 2012. The prize was split by two ticketholders.
