Linda Westbrook of Kansas City (64114)* has a long-time friend and a lot of luck to thank for helping her score a $40,000 Powerball prize on Jan. 23. Seventy-three-year-old Westbrook explained that her fellow Powerball enthusiast pal purchases tickets for both of them weekly.

“He buys one for him and one for me, and we’ve been doing it for three or four years,” said Westbrook. “He called me Saturday morning and told me to go sit down. He said, ‘You just won $40,000!’”

The retired marketing manager plans to use the windfall to celebrate with friends and save for future vacations.

“It’s a little extra cushion that I didn’t have before,” she added.

The winning ticket was purchased at Price Chopper, 1030 W. 103rd St., in Kansas City. Westbrook’s ticket used Power Play, which is $1 feature that allows a winner to increase their prize amount two to four times. In Westbrook’s case, she had matched four white-ball numbers and the Powerball using Quick Pick. Power Play inflated her $10,000 prize into a $40,000 payday.

Powerball is a $2 per play multi-lottery Draw Game that features jackpots starting at $20 million. Drawings are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 9:59 p.m. The largest Powerball jackpot to date was $587.5 million on Nov. 28, 2012. The jackpot was split by two ticketholders – one in Missouri and one in Arizona.
