Trip to Store for a Newspaper Puts a Lucky Player in the Headlines

When a Unionville resident stopped by a local convenience store to buy a newspaper, she ended up becoming a news story herself. While 66-year-old Marilyn Fitzgerald waited for her copy of the Unionville Republican at Casey’s General Store, 2415 Main St. in Unionville, she decided to also buy a Missouri Lottery “Triple Cash” Scratchers ticket. The first-time Lottery winner uncovered a $3,000 prize.

“Everybody in Casey’s just exploded!” Fitzgerald recalled.

After confirming the win with store clerks, Fitzgerald joked that the rest of her day was consumed by a flurry of text messages and calls between family and friends.

The activity director for Putnam County Care said her co-workers “were really excited” to learn about her good fortune. She added that her manager generously granted her a day off, so she could make a six-hour round trip to Lottery headquarters in Jefferson City.

While claiming her prize, Fitzgerald and her husband, Jack, discussed potential plans for the windfall that included a summer vacation to Florida with relatives. They teased that they didn’t know if they’d take the trip or not, but one thing was for sure. They planned to stop for a big celebratory lunch on their way back to Unionville.

Triple Cash,” a $1 ticket with a top prize of $6,000, officially started on April 15.
