The 24th week of 2024 saw the Missouri Lottery’s 24th millionaire of the year when a $5 million prize was claimed in Kansas City.
“This is outstanding,” said Lester Elder, executive director of the Missouri Lottery. “We always enjoy making winners as we work to send funds to Missouri education, but it is just incredible to realize we have averaged a new millionaire every week so far this year.”
The newest millionaire played a “$5,000,000 Fortune” Scratchers ticket – purchased at Sunny’s Liquor & Tobacco, 3921 N.W. Barry Road in Kansas City – and explained how the $50 Scratchers game had drawn his attention when it was first released in late May.
"I hadn't won on this particular game yet, so I bought two tickets," the winner shared. "I scratched a coin stack symbol and thought I'd just won $1 million. I kept scratching and (saw) another coin, so then I knew it was $5 million because I know the game."
“$5,000,000 Fortune” currently offers over $241 million in unclaimed prizes, including two additional top prizes of $5 million, three $1 million prizes and 36 prizes of $50,000.
Since its inception, Missouri Lottery players have won more than $20 billion in prizes and more than $8 billion has been generated for the state and public education.
In FY 23 alone, Missouri Lottery players won $1.2 billion, Lottery retailers received more than $104.8 million in commissions and bonuses, and $425 million in Lottery proceeds went to education programs throughout the state.
