When a customer at QuikTrip, 2166 Hampton Ave. in St. Louis, unexpectedly found a $10 bill in his pocket, he decided to take a chance on a Missouri Lottery ticket.
“I used $5 of it to buy gas, and then I used the other $5 to buy a Scratchers ticket,” he said.
The “Heaps of $500” ticket he purchased was a game he had played before, but with little luck.
“I’ve actually been playing that ticket for a week or so, and I didn’t win anything,” the player shared. “And I thought I’d try it one more time.”
That final chance turned into one of the game’s $100,000 top prizes.
“I got in the car and I called my wife and she didn’t believe me,” he joked. “It wasn’t until I got home and showed her that she believed me.”
“Heaps of $500s” players have won more than $6.4 million in prizes so far. Over $10.8 million remain in unclaimed prizes, including four more top prizes of $100,000.
In FY24, players in St. Louis County won more than $200.8 million in Missouri Lottery prizes, retailers received more than $19.4 million in commissions and bonuses, and more than $161.2 million in Lottery proceeds went to education programs in the county.
