$5,000 Turns into $100,000 Win for Jackson County Scratchers Player

A Missouri Lottery player’s spontaneous purchase of a “Double-Sided Dollars” Scratchers ticket led to her claiming a $100,000 Scratchers prize, though she wasn’t immediately aware of her top-prize win.

“I play (Lottery) every once in a while. I just randomly grabbed the ticket,” she explained of the $5 game she purchased at Hy-Vee, 1525 E. 23rd St., in Independence.

“I went out to my car and scratched it. I only scratched the first number and saw I won $5,000. I thought, ‘That’s good enough for me!’”

Luckily, her best friend convinced her to continue scratching after hearing her story.

“So, I scratched another one and won. Then another one,” she shared. “My best friend was like, ‘I think you might have won the whole thing!’”

Totaling up the prizes, she realized she won one of the game’s $100,000 top prizes.

“I couldn’t tell if I had died,” she laughed. “It was out of reality.”

To date, players have won more than $9.6 million in prizes in the “Double-Sided Dollars” game, with more than $9.4 million in prizes yet to be claimed – including three additional $100,000 top prizes.

In FY24, players in Jackson County won more than $109.8 million in Missouri Lottery prizes, retailers received more than $9.8 million in commissions and bonuses, and more than $22 million in Lottery proceeds went to education programs in the county.
