Local News Story Leads to Discovery of $1 Million Mega Millions Win

Jan. 24, 2025

After claiming her prize at the Missouri Lottery’s Kansas City office on Jan. 9, a Jackson County woman explained the chain of events that led to her purchase a Mega Millions ticket that would ultimately lead to a $1 million prize – a fact she would learn while scrolling on her phone.

She shared she had been waiting for her daughter to pick her up from Cosentino’s Brookside Market, 14 W. 62nd Terrace in Kansas City, when she decided to pick up a Quick Pick Mega Millions ticket to pass the time.

“I thought, ‘While I’m waiting, I might as well go up and get a ticket,’” she said of her purchase for the Dec. 24 drawing. “I even made some comment to the clerk about how nice it would be to win $1 million!”

A few days later, she was scrolling through an app on her phone when a post popped up from a local news station stating that a ticket purchased from that location had won a $1 million prize.

“I thought I was going to have a heart attack!” she said. “It’s an unbelievable feeling!”

She rushed to check the ticket and couldn’t believe her eyes when she realized she was the one who had purchased the winning ticket matching all five white-ball numbers.

“I was just shaking!” she added.

The winning numbers that night were 11, 14, 38, 45 and 46 with a Mega Ball number of 3.

Mega Millions is a multi-state Draw Game, with drawings held every Tuesday and Friday evening at 10 p.m.  Tonight’s estimated jackpot is $28 million.

Players who purchased tickets in Jackson County in FY24 won more than $109.8 million in total Missouri Lottery prizes. Retailers received more than $9.8 million in commissions and bonuses, and education programs in the county received more than $22 million in appropriated Lottery proceeds.
