Powerball Player 'Started the New Year Right' after Discovering $50,000 Winning Ticket

The new year started on a high note for a lucky Missouri Lottery player in Kansas City, who didn’t realize she had been carrying around a Powerball ticket worth $50,000 for nearly a month.

“I bought this ticket on Dec. 4 and it’s been in my purse this whole time!” she exclaimed.

She shared she purchased the ticket at QuikTrip, 600 N.W. 68th St. in Kansas City, after having breakfast and then tucked it away in her purse. It was several weeks later when she remembered to check the ticket.

“I was talking to my daughter while I looked up the winning numbers,” she recalled. “I started circling my numbers and I matched four white-ball numbers and the Powerball.”

“My daughter goes, ‘Mom, that’s $50,000!’”

“I guess she’s been waiting for me to win the Powerball!” she laughed. “I started the new year off right.”

The winning numbers Dec. 4 were 18, 19, 27, 28 and 45, with a Powerball number of 9.

She plans to use some of the winnings to purchase new kitchen appliances.

Players who purchased tickets in Clay County in FY23 won more than $27.9 million in total Missouri Lottery prizes. Retailers in the county received more than $3 million in commissions and bonuses, and education programs received more than $12.6 million in appropriated Lottery proceeds.
