Unplanned Lottery Purchase Lands Player a Scratchers Top Prize

Oct. 26, 2022

When a Missouri Lottery player found himself with some extra cash, he decided to try his luck on a "Holiday Gold" Scratchers ticket. The decision ended up being worth $300,000.

“I was not intending on buying a ticket that day until I got an extra $20 out of the ATM,” the winner shared.

As he scratched off the ticket he purchased at Linq Food Mart, 19700 E. Highway 24 in Independence, he quickly realized he was on the brink of winning a large prize.

“I noticed all the numbers matched on the front, and I was like, ‘Wait, there’s a back side,’” he explained. “I flip it over and nine of the numbers match, and all of them are $30,000 each. My hand was shaking so hard I could barely scratch.”

Once the prize was fully uncovered, reality began to sink in.

“I’m holding $300,000 in my lap,” the winner realized.

He plans to use the money to pay off debt and put the remainder toward retirement.

In the FY22, players who purchased tickets in Jackson County won more than $103.1 million in total Missouri Lottery prizes. Retailers in the county received more than $9.3 million in commissions and bonuses, and education programs in the county received more than $50.2 million in appropriated Lottery proceeds.

Scratchers and Draw Games prizes of more than $600 may be claimed at any Missouri Lottery office – Jefferson City, St. Louis, Kansas City or Springfield – by appointment only. For more information on how to claim a prize, visit MOLottery.com
