A Missouri Lottery player in Scott County had no idea her “$5,000,000 Fortune” Scratchers ticket contained one of the game’s $50,000 prizes until after she gifted the ticket to her husband.
She had bought two of the $50 game at Phillips 66, 310 Crites St. in Scott City, but because she was in a bit of a rush, she didn’t check the number of the ticket as she usually does.
“Prior to winning this, there were certain numbers I wouldn’t buy because I considered them unlucky, and 23 was one of those,” she explained.
Once she checked the numbers on the tickets, she was disappointed to see one of them was number 23 in the pack.
“So I just decided to give it to my husband,” she said. “I scratched off the first ticket and won nothing and he scratched off his and won $50,000!”
Both she and her husband were ecstatic by the win, and the wife added that she learned a big lesson that day.
“What I’ve learned is that there is no unlucky number! I’ll never ask about what the numbers are because it doesn’t matter!” she said.
So far, “$5,000,000 Fortune” players have won over $83 million in prizes. There are currently over $169.5 million in unclaimed prizes, including two top prizes of $5 million, three $1 million prizes and 26 additional prizes of $50,000.
In FY24, players in Scott County won more than $10.6 million in Missouri Lottery prizes, retailers received more than $1 million in commissions and bonuses, and more than $4.4 million in Lottery proceeds went to education programs in the county.
