While driving by Chucks Short Stop, 319 E. Main St. in Fredericktown, a Missouri Lottery player decided to pull over and buy a “500X” Scratchers ticket.
“I had actually bought one for myself and a friend the day before, but it wasn’t a winner,” he said. “When I was driving by the next day, I thought, ‘You know what? This one might hit,’ so I bought another one.”
Once he scratched off the ticket, he realized his last-second purchase had led to a $50,000 win.
The player said he did tell his friend about the win, laughing as he recounted his reaction.
“He was mad!” he joked. “He was like, ‘That could have been me!’”
“500X,” a $50 Scratchers game, currently has two top prizes of $5 million that remain unclaimed, in addition to four prizes of $1 million and 42 more $50,000 prizes.
In FY22, players in Madison County won more than $3.3 million in Missouri Lottery prizes, retailers received more than $234,000 in commissions and bonuses, and more than $321,000 in Lottery proceeds went to education programs in the county.
