A Missouri Lottery player stopped by Brother’s Market, 1004 5th Ave. in St. Joseph, to grab a bag of ice and pick up a Scratchers ticket on the way home from work. Little did she know she’d soon be claiming a prize worth $100,000.
“I thought, ‘Well, I’ll just buy a crossword ticket,’” the winner explained.
She purchased the $5 “20X Crossword” Scratchers ticket and then went home where she began scratching it off.
“I thought I had won $500,” she said. “So I told my husband and we were excited.”
Her husband then pointed out there was a multiplier on the ticket she hadn’t finished scratching off yet.
“It was a 2, but when I finished scratching it off it was 20!” she said. “I made my husband double check it twice.”
It’s not the first time the winner has lucked out playing the Missouri Lottery. She shared she had previously won in a second-chance promotion and had taken a trip to Hawaii. She plans to use part of this prize to put a new deck on her house.
“You just take a deep breath!” she concluded.
“20X Crossword” players have won more than $6.8 million in prizes since the $5 game was released. Over $10.2 million remain in unclaimed prizes, including five more top prizes of $100,000.
In FY23, players in Buchanan County won more than $16.1 million in Missouri Lottery prizes, retailers received more than $1.6 million in commissions and bonuses, and more than $5.4 million in Lottery proceeds went to education programs in the county.
